Compression Fractures Due To Osteoporosis Now Have Safer Treatments.

A potential cause of back pain in the elderly is osteoporosis. This condition lowers bone density making bones more brittle and easier to break. While the bones in a healthy spinal column take a fairly substantial jolt to damage, when bones weaken due to osteoporosis, they can fracture due to a simple bump or fall. These are called compression fractures since the top part of a vertebra is forced down into the lower part causing fracture. Modern advances in low back pain management offer elderly with these fractures minimally invasive treatment options known as vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty. The success rate is high, and the risks associated with the intervention are much lower than open surgery.

Vertebroplasty

This minimally invasive treatment for low back pain caused by an osteoporotic compression fracture is designed to fill in and stabilize the fracture with  bone cement, allowing the patient to regain mobility without pain in just a few days. Vertebroplasty is performed by image guided insertion of a needle through a tiny skin incision into the fracture and filling the bone with the cement. The cement dries quickly and stabilizes the fracture, eliminating the pain. Most patients who have the vertebroplasty to treat acute compression fractures experience almost complete relief of pain in the long term with many experiencing significant reduction of pain or complete pain relief immediately following the procedure. You are only required to stay in the treatment facility for four hours following the procedure, and are allowed to return to daily activities almost immediately with some restrictions.

Kyphoplasty

Similar to vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty was designed to treat more severe wedge shaped compression fractures by reducing the fracture and restoring the normal shape of the vertebrae. Using a special surgical needle place through a tiny skin incision, a balloon device is inserted into the fractured vertebra and inflated. The inflated balloon will restore or partially restore the vertebral body to its normal shape. After the balloon is removed the vertebra is filled with bone cement stabilizing the fracture and maintaining its restored shape. Patients are placed at bed rest for fours after kyphoplasty prior to discharge from the hospital, and are allowed to return to daily activities almost immediately with some restrictions.
